VMWorld 2007: Panel Discussion
After the evangelist left there started a panel discussion about power utilization in the datacenter – and environmental impact. Mmmm, I took a 6k flight to get to VMworld to here this – how much CO2 is that in emisssions? My other thought on this issue – is how power and cooling does your average blade enclosure take. I have a client who can’t have them because they draw so much power. Lastly, warranties expire after 3 years. For many people it is more cost effective to scrap these servers and buy new hardware – than pay the fees for extended warranties. Were does this unwanted hardware find itself? On ebay? or due to regulation and compliance – does end up being commerically destroyed. A euphamism for land-fill.
Virtualization at the forefront at the global warming. We have a long way to go to get even near making headway. The previous speaker spoke about increasing sales and consumption, and growth rates 5%… I think we need to aviod patting ourselves on the back too much… Its kind a weird to be here in the US and talking about energy consumption – like Kyoto never happened…?
