What’s New in VCB

Rather by accident today I stumbled upon a new feature of VCB. LAN Backup with VCB. Even if your VCB proxy has no SAN or iSCSI visability you can still use VCB. There is a new “LAN Copier” which allows you still backup. Of course, this kinda negates the whole point of VCB to some degree – offloading the backup from the network to the SAN/iSCSI system. The new switch -m “nbd” which allows you to enable this mode. Interestingly, if you get an error in this config the error tells you to use ndb, not nbd. The command-line help does say clearly to use -m “nbd”

I had to get my own copy of the VMware Consolidated Backup Improvements in Version 3.5 .pdf and understand the new LAN-based backup feature. In short, the requirement for a storage area network, and therefore the installation of VCB on a physical server with HBA(s) has been removed. Installing VCB on a Windows 2003 virtual machine is now possible. Maybe not recommended for larger environments, but possible and a achievable design for smaller infrastructures. [...]
