Administering VMware Site Recovery Manager – CHAPTER 1

To celebrate the arrival of my first advertiser to RTFM. I would like to begin the process of slowly releasing my SRM book free to download. The SRM book will remain commerically available for sometime – and when SRM 2.0 the “old” SRM1.0 book will become completely free. As I release each chapter I will be reviewing the content for any old typos, and rolling those changes through to the commerical book. Remember PDFs are great but when a book runs to 300+ pages it is actually cheaper to buy a copy than it is to take it to a printers (believe you me I learned this during the proofing phase how expensive) plus you get it delivered to your door with a perfect binding! My next free chapter will update the content I created about Lefthand Networks VSA, which is now on SAN/IQ Version 8. There aren’t a huge amount of differences so hopefully it won’t take long…

This book is still based on the original GA version – not the recent U2 edition. U2 did introduce new features and some options ceased being experimental. But not enough changes we introduced to force me to stop work on vSphere4. But I will as each chapter comes out – review the content and update it accordingly.

Enjoy your first free chapter! :-)

Any chance to buy your book at VMworld Europe in Cannes?

    Thanks for this chapter :)

Ideally, yes. I did have an authors edition at VMworld 2008. Unfortunately, the company organizing the book store in Canne is not the same company. Despite repeatedly trying to get put in contact with them – I’ve had no response. Maybe because I lack an ISBN and I’m not Amazon – they don’t want to touch me. Bookstores can be snooty people sometimes!

Anyway, perhaps I should get a palate of books shipped out to Canne. Get a t-shirt and ruck sack – with the T-Shirt saying “Stop me and Buy one”. It’s what ice-cream vans used to have in the UK! :-D

An update: I’ve just order 100 copies of the SRM book to be sent to VMware in the Netherlands. It’s a bit of narrow deadline they have to get their by 3pm of 20nd Feb. If they get there on time they will be on sale at the VMworld Bookstore in Canne.

    Hi there
i was just wondering whether the VSA has to be licensed prior to running Site recovery manager?
i followed the instructions in the book yet am having issues with the actual live DR (not the test, this seems to run fine)
the error complains about a valid license key when invoking the real thing(in refernce to remote snapshots)? i thought that you could use this without having to purchase a license key for 30 days yet the errors i am getting make me think otherwise
    any help would be great!
    much appreciated!

    Phil Waller

I believe the VSA is fully-functional within the 30-day period. Let me check with Adam Carter of LHN. I worked with a NFR version of the product, because I could write a book on 30-day access. Regards Mike
