Running ESX4 on VMware Workstation 6/ESX4

Well, they were the first (as I can recall) to show who you could virtualize ESX 3 on VMware Workstation 6 – and they boys at xtravirt.com have done it again with ESX 4.

The PDF is here… http://xtravirt.com/user?destination=/node/177

BUT, unfortuantely, you do have to register with the site to get the PDF file – unlike (ahem) other website I could mention :-)

If you want to virtualize ESX4 on ESX4 you will need processors that support Virtualization Hardware Assist (Intel-V or AMD-V) and make sure the VM that runs the virtualized ESX host is patched to a vSwitch/Port group that has been enabled for promicious mode. But after that it is very easy to just install ESX into a VM.

No fancy edits need to be made to the VM to make this happen – but if you then want to create a VM on the virtualized ESX host you will need to modify the .VMX file to allow that to happen:

1. Right-click the virtualized ESX VM

2. Select Edit Settings

3. Choose the Options Tab and Select the Configuration Parameters button

4. Click the Add Row button

5. In the name column add the monitor_control.restrict_backdoor entry

6. In the value column set it to be true

You don’t need to register for the doc, just use the account that is set up at bugmenot.com for a user name and password that works!
I despise sites that want me to register to download content!

There’s an annoying 2GB memory requirement. I was able to get around it by modifying /etc/vmware/init/init.d/00.vmnix and changing RequiredMemory to 516096
Now it boots with 768MB. I tried 512 but received a PSOD.

Hi I was happy to find this blog where I need to a fix a problem with my ESX which I installed on VMware Workstation 7. I added the line by editing the virtual machine settings file. I tried to load an win2003 ISO and got this error.

“Running VMware ESX in a virtual machine requires the outer virtual machine to be configured for running a VMware ESX guest operating system. You cannot power on a virtual machine until the outer virtual machine is reconfigured.”

could there be anything wrong with my installation?
