I think this is in response to lower than expected registration rates for VMworld US.

It’s hard to know precisely why the date has been changed. From my perspective, the closer the US/EU events are – the LESS like I am to attend both events – as essentially they won’t differ. By putting them so close together people in EMEA are less likely to attend. That’s a bit of shame really because of me – the critical part of attending the US event is touching base with my buddies in the US both at big corporates, but also fellow bloggers.
One of the criticisms of the US events from Americans – is how its always put in the West – and never comes over to the East Coast – but I imagine that all down to the fact that VMW corp hq is in Palo Alto…

Actually, this years event was in the same location as 2008, and there was only a couple more hundred delegates. But your right, it felt tight this year, AND the year before. Anyway, discouraging attendance the EU event shouldn’t be part of VMworld plan – but enabling more people to go. I can only see one or two advantages. If VMworld EU is a re-run of VMworld US, there is no longer any need to attend both, or the worry that if you attend one you might “miss” stuff in the other. The other advantages for folks like me who have attended both – is reduced cost and pollution. Given the choice between the two events, I think I would go to the US one for reasons I gave earlier…
