vSphere Demos/Videos

This videos were created using HyperCam as on screen recorder. They were then converted into flash videos. I’ve tested them with Google Chrome – and display brillantly at 1024×768 resolution.

These videos are FREE, as such the quality reflects that fact! It’s just little ole me with decent mic and some screen grab software :-p

But that said, they are almost full-screen and not these scrappy things you can (bearly) see on youtube.com. They run on average from anywhere from 10-30 minutes long. There just me explaining what I’m upto whilst I carry out the various tasks, with a bit of explaination of what the score is. So they are quick and dirty videos. Well, not that dirty – don’t get your hopes fellas! :-) . Above all these videos are just quick fire demonstations – they are NOT (repeat are NOT) intended as a replacement for authorised classroom based training – that’s something I currently do as my regular daytime job. There is difference. Classroom training wipes the floor with any CBT as far as I’m concerned. But heck, as a a classroom based instructor I would say that wouldn’t I?

The main reason I put these videos together is as free supplement to my soon-to-be-released book on vSphere4, and to give people who by the book – a live on screen demo of the configuration – although you don’t have to buy the book to watch these videos. I find it’s often its easier to quickly show something than it is to do a 100 screen grabs and loads of text – but in the same instance videos don’t allow for long and details discussions of best practises and possible configurations. So if you want detail, get the book – but if you want quick high-level views of things – the videos slot into that…

I start with nothing – no ESX, no domain controllers, SQL or vCenter. And everything is done with virtual machines, apart from the ESX host(s) which are physical boxes. If your new to VMware start with the first video and work you way through each one. If you have familiarity with VMware products then by all means skip videos where see it appropriate.

    Mike,

There seems to be an issue with:
    ch2pt4
    ch3pt1

The requested URL /videos/chapter02-Part-04-esxi-hosts.swf was not found on this server.

  3. John Taylor Says:

First off – excellent videos. I’ve passed your site on to a number of guys at the company I work for who are learning VMware right now and they are all very impressed.

Looks like the URLs for a couple of the videos are broken – Chapter 2 Part 4 and Chapter 3 Part 1 – looks like there is an extra dash betweeen the part and number eg part-04 should be part04

Anyway – thanks for publishing this – certainly a goldmine of information here

    cheers

    John

Ah, yes. Sorry about that. You know I checked everyone, and still somehow I screwed up. So it goes. All fixed up now. :-)

Opps. Fixed that. A bit of case-sensitivity crept in…

  7. Brian Says:

Mike you the man, will these be included in the new book, do you plan to add additional videos for other chapters at a later date and have you got a release date yet for the book as I have pre-booked mine on amazon; awaiting patiently.

    Brian

  8. Mike Laverick Says:

Yep. I will be adding more videos – plan to create a definitive series when I can. Bit hampered by the building work outside my house…. McGraw-Hill don’t generally create books that include CD/DVDs – hence the reason I thought I would use my site to distribute them. Conservatively, the published have put a Feb,2010 release date on the book, just to keep Amazon happy – I’m hoping (all fingers crossed, that it comes out sooner than that…)

  9. Chandra Says:

Excellent work!! These videos are really good. When are you planning to post other videos?
I am eagerly waiting for your book release date as well.

    Cheers,
    Chandra

  10. Mike Laverick Says:

Thank you very much. I am planning more videos. Unfortunately, my work on the SRM 4.0 Book makes it hard for me find the time & the kit to do the videos. I should be finished in the New Year with the SRM 4.0 book. So I will go on to complete the video series. My plan is to have Chapter6-21 finished by the time my book on vSphere4 is launched. That way the videos will map to the book.

Feb, 2010 is the release date for the vSphere4 book. :-D

  14. Mike Laverick Says:

Yep. Well, I need to get this SRM 4.0 book put to bed – then I will have some more free time to devote to the videos…. want to do a complete series on vSphere4 and then follow thru on some new SRM videos…

  15. Naser Khater Says:

Mike, you did great job with the demos, I am wondering if you have released anything regarding Update Manager install, kinda similar to vCenter setup/install in chapter02-part02-install-vcenter.swf. Thanks
