New Version of the UDA 2.0 (Build 14)…

Well, that isn’t really very true. It’s not very new at all. It’s been available on Carl’s www.ultimatedeployment.org website for AGES! And I have been just to goddamn lazy to bring it over into the ESX format, and package it up as an OVA file – for easy importing. Carl has been a busy bee, because the last time I looked at the UDA it didn’t support ESX3i/4i. But now it does!

What inspired me to get off my fat lazy ass and do this. Well, I’m looking at the ESXi 4.1 deployment process and seeing if Carl needs to do any more work. So I hope with Carl’s help (he’s the brains behind the operation, I’m just his lackey), we can have the UDA ready to support ESXi 4.1 when it ships!

Download the latest version of the UDA here, together with a sample template & subtemplate…

    Hey guys,

I just got my hands on ESXi 4.1 and tried to plug it into UDA 2.0 Build 14. I get the following error when trying to import the OS “Could not copy file ienviron.tgz to /var/public/tftproot/esx4i.ESXi41.ienviron.tgz”. Looks like the new name of the file is “ienviron.vgz” Any idea when a new build of UDA 2.0 will be out that will support ESXi 4.1?

    Thanks!
    Todd

I’ve supplied Carl with the ESX4i iso during the beta programme for testing purposes, and neglected to hand him the ESX4 “Classic” .ISO… That’s my bad…

Anyway, I’ve just pinged Carl an email to ask him were we are on this… After all I’m not the developer… With luck we should be able to provide a quick fix on this, and then setup a new build for UDA in the form of vmdk files or .OVA files.

    Mike,

That sounds great! Thanks for the quick feedback. I’ll keep an eye on the website to look for updates.

    Thanks again!

    Hi,

I thought I’ll hack it together myself but ended up with a problem.

I edited a file called esx4i.pl in the /var/public/cgi-bin/os directory of UDA.

Just changed all the file names to the ones on the cd. No more copy errors.

    My test host boots and I see the yellow gray screen for a few seconds and then a purple screen with the error message;

‘Could not populate the file system: Boot image is corrupted’

The vmkernel log say’s the same.

Anyone else an idea how to fix it quick ? ;-)

Preferably by just editing some files on the UDA appliance ?

First, I just want to say that UDA 2.0 ROCKS!

I played around with UDA 2.0 and ESXi 4.1 and got the install to work. Kudos to Jay Akumar for posting the steps on his website on how to create the image.tzg file.

    http://jayakumar.co.in/general/pxe-boot-vmware-esxi-4-1-and-manual-install/

Steps from his site to create the image.tgz file:

    - Rename the imagedd.bz file to VMware-VMvisor-big-260247-x86_64.dd.bz2

    mv imagedd.bz2 VMware-VMvisor-big-260247-x86_64.dd.bz2

    - Create a folder structure that ESXi installer looks for the system file in

    mkdir –p usr/lib/vmware/installer/

    - Move the file to the correct location

    mv VMware-VMvisor-big-260247-x86_64.dd.bz2 usr/lib/vmware/installer/

    - The installer is looking for a tar fgz file named image.tgz, so lets create one.

    tar cvzf image.tgz usr/

And here’s what I did on the UDA server.

Note: esxi41 is a name of the directory that will store my esxi 4.1 install files on the UDA server.

    – Mount the ESXi4.1 ISO on the UDA server and copy the content to /var/public/tftproot/esxi41/

    - Follow Jay’s steps above to create the image.tgz file and copy it back to /var/public/tftproot/esxi41/

    - On the UDA server, create a new template for the ESXi 4.1 install and select VMWARE ESX 4i Installable as the Operating System.

    - Configure the new ESXi 4.1 template as follow:

    Kernel:
    esxi41/mboot.c32

    Kernel option command-line:
    esxi41/vmkboot.gz — esxi41/vmkernel.gz — esxi41/sys.vgz — esxi41/cim.vgz — esxi41/ienviron.vgz — esxi41/image.tgz — esxi41/install.vgz

    enjoy!
