What’s New in vSphere 4.1 – VAAI and Hidden 4th Primative

Intriguing blogpost title?

    Disclosure – EMCer here.

    Hey Mike,

Primitives are used in SCSI communications…

A SCSI “Primitive” is used for a variety of signaling and handshaking functions, and perform most of the low-level, time-critical functions.

SCSI Frames perform the high-level functions on a serial bus by carrying commands, data, status, and configuration information.

For what it’s worth, I liked it better when I didn’t have to register for membership to a site to read your articles. A shame this stuff isn’t posted in its entirety on RTFM.

    Hi Mike and Denis,

Does it means that a SCSI “Primitive” is called by vmkernel to update the Metadata via scsi-reservations?

    Thanks,

    Jose Maria Gonzalez
