Upgrading to ESX 3.5 and VirtualCenter 2.5 Experiences

For the last couple of days I have been upgrading my environment from VMware Virtual Infrastructure 3.0.x to 3.5. I have two VC environments. One I use for my own personal development (rtfm-ed.co.uk) and another which I put together to write the new book (vi3book.com). I found I could upgrade the RTFM environment without a hitch – and didn’t have a good experience with the vi3book.com VC environment – with all kinds of VC DB upgrade errors… Not nice…

Anyway, as ever I’ve documented my experiences in a PDF file.

[...] Depending on your current database type (BTW, MSDE has been replaced by SQL 2005 Express) you will need to consider how to migrate. You may not even be concerned about keeping the old data and are willing to start fresh with a new Virtual Center. Whatever your decision, the previously mentioned upgrade guide contains a great section of instructions on migrating and upgrading the various different databases. Mike Laverick over at RTFM also has just published his experiences upgrading, and his .pdf contains pointers to guide you through the same VC rough spots I experienced – with links and screenshots even. [...] So I was going to write an article about my experiences upgrading from VI3 to VI3.5, but Mike over at RTFM-Education beat me to it. He has put out a great PDF talking about a lot of the steps and nuances involved in the upgrade process for both VC2.5 and ESX3.5. I highly recommend you take a look at Mike Laverick’s Upgrading to ESX 3.5 and VirtualCenter 2.5 Experiences.     Comment     RSS Feed     Email a friend [...]
