Citrix preaches ‘second mover advantage’ over VMware

Friday, October 19th, 2007

The Register has an interesting article discussing Citrix’s acquistition of Xen. Citrix paid $500m for a company that will make $8m this year… Citrix appear to viewing virtualization from their “desktop” end-user perspective, clearly postitioning themselves as the best company to delivery thin-client from Citrix MetaFrame Boxes or from Virtual Desktop machines. Interestingly it appears that Citrix will persist in the user-connection license model rather than using the per-socket model that VMware uses. Anyway, the full story appears here on the Registers website:

Citrix Corrupt ICA File

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

Well, I don’t really “do” Citrix anymore – as now I’m kinda of a pure VMware guy now. But as a nod to my previous existance a Citrix Certified Instructor I thought I would blog about this one. Anyway, in the process of building my VDC (on a old release of Citrix MetaFrame) I found the Citrix client version 10 didn’t like my old web-interface. As it try to download the ICA file to make the connection I got this error:

“Error number 2314
“The ICA Client received a corrupt ICA File. ICA File section WFClient contains duplication keys named (ProxyType)”

Fortunately, the Citrix KB system came up trumps. Apparently, the 10.x client checks for duplicate enteries in the ICA file. All I had to do was modify the templates.ica file and remove the duplicates – and the new client works (and seems very fast too!). Quite how those duplicate enteries got in my ICA file is another question!

Citrix Remote Desktop Broker – Desktop Virtualization

Saturday, August 19th, 2006

Michael Knight from the London User group has put me onto a PDF from Doug Browns of dabcc.com

“Introducing Remote Desktop Broker (RDB). We have learned that Citrix Systems will release a new solution, dubbed Remote Desktop Broker, to address the virtual desktop market within the next few weeks. RDB combines Citrix Systems’ existing technologies (e.g., Presentation Server, Web Interface, Citrix Access Gateway, etc.) with partner solutions (e.g., Microsoft Virtual Server, VMware ESX). Residing on Presentation Server, RDB software manages and dynamically provisions virtual machines containing unique Windows desktop images to end users—marking Citrix Systems’ first foray into the emerging virtual desktop infrastructure market.”
