In this short video that I’ve done for TechTarget and NetApp – I show how you configure SnapMirror for SRM. I start from the very basics of creating a volume, setting the NFS permissions, mounting the volume to the ESX hosts – and then I head to show how to configure NetApp SnapMirror – not content with that I show you install the NetApp SRA and configure the “Array Manager” ready to run a recovery plan with VMware Site Recovery Manager – you can watch the whole thing here.

Tip: I recommend you watch in full screen! :-D

This videos were created using HyperCam as on screen recorder. They were then converted into flash videos. I’ve tested them with Google Chrome – and display brillantly at 1024×768 resolution.

These videos are FREE, as such the quality reflects that fact! It’s just little ole me with decent mic and some screen grab software :-p

But that said, they are almost full-screen and not these scrappy things you can (bearly) see on youtube.com. They run on average from anywhere from 10-30 minutes long. There just me explaining what I’m upto whilst I carry out the various tasks, with a bit of explaination of what the score is. So they are quick and dirty videos. Well, not that dirty – don’t get your hopes fellas! :-) . Above all these videos are just quick fire demonstations – they are NOT (repeat are NOT) intended as a replacement for authorised classroom based training – that’s something I currently do as my regular daytime job. There is difference. Classroom training wipes the floor with any CBT as far as I’m concerned. But heck, as a a classroom based instructor I would say that wouldn’t I?

The main reason I put these videos together is as free supplement to my soon-to-be-released book on vSphere4, and to give people who by the book – a live on screen demo of the configuration – although you don’t have to buy the book to watch these videos. I find it’s often its easier to quickly show something than it is to do a 100 screen grabs and loads of text – but in the same instance videos don’t allow for long and details discussions of best practises and possible configurations. So if you want detail, get the book – but if you want quick high-level views of things – the videos slot into that…

I start with nothing – no ESX, no domain controllers, SQL or vCenter. And everything is done with virtual machines, apart from the ESX host(s) which are physical boxes. If your new to VMware start with the first video and work you way through each one. If you have familiarity with VMware products then by all means skip videos where see it appropriate.

Well, I’ve had some more time in the mountains since getting back from the User Summit in Charlotte, North Carolina. Actually, one of these videos was taken the day I arrived but didn’t get time to pull the video of my camcorder and re-encoded it until yesterday. So there’s one video where I show you where I am staying, and the other two videos are of me taking a break from the booky wook and playing my guitar.

Yesterday I took a walk in the dem der hills. Got a little lost in the forest… Walked about 6 miles in the mid-day sun in away that only mad dogs and Englishmen do! After doing this blog post I’m going to carry on to Gatlinberg which is in the Smokey Mountains, but technically not even in the same state as where I’m staying. I’m in Bryson City, NC but Gatlinberg is in TN. Main reason to drive there is to see some scenary and get some good driving in – but also because Gatlinberg is mentioned in the Johnny Cash song “A boy named Sue”. I want it to have as a claim to fame that I’ve actually been there.

This is a short 25 min video I did recently for the Virtualization User Group – Ireland (VUGIE). I couldn’t attend the event because I was in Olso teaching for Global Knowledge. The video is quick round up of Virtualization News surrounding Microsoft, VMware and Citrix. Videos are something I want to do more off on the site. I’m still wrapped up in the finishing of the vSphere4 book I just don’t have time for them right now. But I want vNews to become a regular addition to RTFM Education, perhaps on a bi-weekly or monthly basis. Additionally, I want to do a whole series of How to do… style videos that show how easy it is to setup and configure vSphere4. 

Sorry, to the iPOD users hear. I know the powerpoint bullets are way too small for an IPOD screen. I will know better next time. I case of trying to keep things short and sweet, whilst overloading the powerpoint slide! Anyway, I’ve uploaded a MP4 file for your IPOD, and the original PPT file if you want the links.

This session was about VC Heartbeat Service. It’s not free (its actually quite expensive!) and I believe its a licensed version of NeverFail for VirtualCenter. It looks like you cannot VMware FT vCenter (don’t quote me on that – this still bleeding edge stuff which hardly anyone has tried!) which would be the natural thing to do. So basically, VMware create single-point of failure for MANAGEMENT (I know VC is not single point of failure for VMs)… upon which ALL the high-level management layers (SRM, LCM, LM, View, etc) depend – so not only I have to pay for vCenter, I pay again if it fails… Yikes!

I’ve got customers who have had VC up for 18 months without a problem (they clearly do no upgrades then, Mike?) so you gotta wonder whether its worth the spend…
