VMworld VIDEO: VMware Certified Instructor (VCI) Day

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Today I’m attending the VCI Day. This morning we looked at the “Next Generation” of VMware technologies – that’s the code word for the product-that-the-lawyers-won’t-allow-you-to-refer-to-because-your-constrained-by-the-NDA!

Still I learnt quite a bit here and there – because although I have been writing about the next generation of techs since October – I’ve been busy making sure the Vi3 book fits with the NG… I’ve been holding of the very brand new features until VMworld Europe 2009 because I expect to learn a lot this week…

VIDEO: VMworld Europe 2009 – Canne (AGAIN!!!)

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Well, I’ve (finally) arrived in Canne – and given I live in Europe (allegedly) it was a bit of nightmare of journey – caused by ****-up on my behalf by booking a flight that required me to switch from Paris-Charles-de-Gaul to Orly by bus. Well, it was all downhill after that – the use of the word “bus” gives a way. It’s hard to think of the last time I had such a crap journey. Unless I shudder and remember a flight back from Athens to London, Heathrow. It was about 3.5hr flight from Greece to the UK… and then a further 2.5 wait for a bloody bags to arrive off the carousel. You see there’s only one thing worse than arriving in France on a plane, and that’s arriving at Heathrow…. Anyway, the delights of modern travel are outlined in this video diary of my journey…

Video WebCast: What’s Mike upto this week?

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Here’s a video webcast about what I’ve been upto this week. Well, actually this was taken about 2 weeks ago – but only gotten round to uploading this very week. Been soooo overwelmed with work, and goddamn email it’s untrue!

My topics include:

  • Plans Online Training
  • Where I am on the Vi4book
  • Experiences of View3 on Vi4
  • Problems with Microsoft NLB
  • When will the Ops Guide for Vi4 be released?
  • Plans for the SRM Book
  • Free Content funded by Sponsors/Adverts
  • No Subscription
  • World Domination…

If you perfer to use iTunes, and want to watch this video on your iPOD then fine – you need to right click this link here, and download and iTunes – video has some URLS it which might difficult to read/write down – so they are reproduced below this post (ps the size is 130MB, which I know is a bit hefty for a 20min download so I will be experimenting in a more audio lossy format without depreciating the video quality)

Dr Evil strikes again!

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Hope I didn’t hurt his feelings on that blog post. Perhaps I should start by dropping the Dr Evil tag, unless it has already stuck already. Sorry Richard, I was only pulling your leg! Anyway, VMware’s Richard G has put up a video-blog post of his recent keynote at the European VForum show. In the video Richard explains explaining what VMware is about and what their future developments are:

Site Recovery Manager – Primary Site is DEAD!!!

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Carrying on from last week videos – this week I’ve been documenting the proceedure for running SRM recovery plans – when the primary or protected site has died – as opposed to a planned outgage.

The work on the book is coming along well. I’m at 1st draft stage. It’s off to my corrected for spelling and grammer errors by my partner, Carmel. Once she has weaved her special kind magic (making my unintelligable mix of grunts and screen grabs into the Queen’s English) it will be off to some guys I know at VMware and some storage folks I know – to be torn to shreads I guess. OR, should that be “constructive criticism”. So I’m taking a break from SRM for a couple weeks – I’m too close the content and need to give myself a well-earned thing for a bit.

Anyway, here’s that video:

Running a Recovery Plan when the Protected Site is DEAD!

Video Podcast: Mike on the “What should VMware do next?” (Part 2 of 2)

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

In this second part of the series I discuss some of the short-comings in the Vi3.5 offering gathered from the VMware Community Forums. I then try to take these negatives and convert them into positives. After all product limitation, is a product opportunity

Video: Two VMware Site Recovery Manager Videos

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

I’ve been working with VMware’s Site Recovery Manager product for sometime, indeed I’m in the process of completing a book on the product. As a companion to the book I’ve put together a couple of Microsoft .wmv files that show a test of a site recovery plan, and the actual run of a recovery plan for really. One of the reasons for doing this – is a SRM is very dynamic product which automates a heck of lot of manual proceedures – so one click can have multiple actions – and its good to see that in live action – as you see the changes taking place at the protected site and the recovery site. Certainly easier to capture a movie of a recovery plan than describe in painful detail each step with hundreds of screen grabs – I can tell you

Video Podcast: Mike on the “What should VMware do next?” (Part 1 of 2)

Friday, June 20th, 2008

OK. This is my second attempt release this videopodcast. Sorry about the earlier problems, the uploading tool I’d move to was quietly corrupting the file. This version works!

This the first part of a presentation I orginally delivered at the North Carolina User Summit in April. It’s about common compliants and criticisms of the Vi3.5 product – and how it could be improved. The insights and comments come from the VMware Community Forums – and I see myself as trying to facilitate end-users viewpoint potentially reaching the ears of VMware.

Video Podcast: Mike on the “Myths of Virtualization” (Part 3 of 3)

This is the third and final part of a presentation I originally delivered at the North Carolina user group meeting.
