Use and Automate the Virtual Disk Shrink Feature (Legacy Article)

Update:
Since writing this document Mark Russinovich of sysinternals (recently aquired by Micro$oft) has released a new version of the sdelete tool. The new version of sdelete has a new switch which can be used to zero-out redudent/deleted files from a virtual disk prior to being exported for backup or transfer to another VMware vPlatform.

This guide explains what the shrink option does in VMware Tools and how it can be used to significantly reduce the size of an export virtual disk – especially useful if you use exporting as you method of backup.

Matt Pound from the VMware Community Forum has also been able to use Microsoft tools to automate the shrink process – and guess what it works inside a Windows virtual machine running inside VMware too. Read Matt’s document here

Convert VirtualCenter’s 1.x MDB database to SQL
This whitepaper takes you through the steps required to convert the VirtualCenter’s database from Access (MDB) to SQL. You can use this convert from MDB to a format that is compatiable with VirtualCenter 2.x which no longer supports MDB. This said if that is your scenario – you might perfer to chuck in the towel altogether and start with a fresh install
